Last week, I met up with celebrity dermatologist & cosmetologist Dr. Jaishree Sharad who isn’t just my skin guru but also a really dear friend of mine. So when I called her to set up this interview, she was kind enough to agree & give me a good 30 minutes with her so as I could ask her all that I wanted to know about lip fillers! In fact, over a recent poll conducted on my Instagram, a lot of you had doubts, curiosity and the greed for knowing what exactly are lip fillers which also did push me to set up this interview so as I could have none other than an expert give us insights about this popular trend.
In the west though, lip fillers are extremely common all the way from teenagers to women in their 40’s! However, in India too, thanks to Kylie & Kim, young girls are quite wanting a fuller pout effect & while there are many who have even gotten it done, not everyone is comfortable to come out in the open & talk about it. None the less, I bring to you Jaishree Sharad straight from her clinic Skinfiniti in Khar who was busy attending a famous bollywood actor when I visited her so when we got together, I jumped straight to asking her questions! Lets dive in.
Hesha (H): Are Lip Fillers & Botox The Same Thing?
Dr. Jaishree Sharad (JS):
Botulinum toxin, is a natural, purified protein that is used to temporarily relax facial muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. Botox is the original and best-known brand name and the most tested product on the market. It is the result of many decades of studies and has been used extensively in medicine. It is the safest product, and is certified in the medical and cosmetic field. This treatment can be used on a wide range of patients, and is primarily used for skin rejuvenation and the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles.
As we age, the natural collagen and elastic in the skin lessens, as cells lose their ability to produce more of their youthful component. The skin becomes dryer, thinner and less able to fix itself. When we’re born, we have plentiful amounts of hyaluronic acid (HA) in our body, but as we get older this store of HA diminishes, leaving the skin less well supported, and so lines and wrinkles develop. Lip fillers are basically hyaluronic acid that are injected into the lips to plum them, add volume as well as give them a more flushed look. They basically fill up areas that have lost volume due to age, excessive smoking or probably due to genetics.
H: Are Lip Fillers Permanent? Is It Different From A Lip Surgery?
JS: Lip fillers are very different from a Lip Surgery. A surgery is permanent but lip fillers are temporary & they can be modified or removed as per the patient’s requirements. Lip Fillers usually last for about 4-8 months depending on certain factors while on the other hand a lip surgery is a lip lift which is permanent that mainly takes care of the shape of the lip but not hydration.
H: What Is The Procedure For Getting Lip Fillers At Skinfiniti?
JS: At Skinfiniti, we first brief the patient about lip fillers & tell them about the post care. After that, we clean the lip area & take pictures so as we can better understand the patient’s expectations as well as what would suit them best basis their facial structure & present lip shape. Post analysis, we clean the lip area & apply a numbing cream which is left for about 20 minutes so as during the procedure, the patient experiences less to minimal discomfort. Once done, basis on the type of filler chosen, we begin the procedure.
H: What Can One Expect Immediately After The Procedure?
JS: Mild swelling to slight bruising is absolutely normal however this too depends from individual to individual. There’s absolutely nothing to worry about as these fade off within 2-3 days. I have had some patients who didn’t bruise at all while there were some who had bruising for almost 10 days. A lot also depends on how you take care of your lips post the procedure. A few simple precautionary steps to keep in mind & you will be good to go.
H: What Are The Do’s & Don’ts Post A Lip Filler Procedure?
JS: The foremost thing to keep in mind immediately after the procedure is to make sure that you do not massage your lips or try shaping them yourselves. Besides, icing is not recommended post the procedure, let your lips breathe for the next couple days & the swelling as well as bruising (if any) will settle & heal on its own. Also, make sure that for the next 24 hours, you avoid smoking, consumption of alcohol along with having hot liquids such as extremely hot tea or coffee.
H: How Safe Are Fillers? What Is The Correct Age To Get Lip Fillers Given Teenagers Are Quite Attracted To Lip Fillers These Days.
JS: As long as you are doing hyaluronic acid fillers, they are safe but in my personal opinion if you ask me, I’d ideally recommend lip fillers for someone who is 25 or more because you have to keep doing it & besides, fillers can be expensive so it’s important that you keep all of these factors in mind.
H: Tell Us Two Common Myths Around Lip Fillers & Can You Bust Them For Us?
JS: A lot of patients come to me with doubts such as once the filler fades out, will their lips get distorted or the shape will not be appealing & I always tell them that no such thing is ever going to happen. In fact, once the filler dies down, the shape of the lip will always be 5% better than what it was before they got their first lip filler, there’s no way it’s going to get any worse. So this is one very common myth which I hope I have busted for many today. Other than that, a lot of people think that lip fillers are like injecting chemicals into our skin but the reality is that we are simply injecting HA back into your lips which is a component that’s already present inside us & due to various conditions such as ageing, smoking etc that we discussed above, the hylarunoic acid fades off so it’s very safe.
H: Are There Any Side Effects?
JS: One of the most common side effects is bruising but there’s nothing to really worry about as it’s extremely normal since we are playing with blood vessels here so after a couple days, it totally goes away. What we at Skinfiniti usually tell out patients is to avoid green tea, pain killers or Omega3 supplements 3 days prior to the procedure as they tend to thin the blood. We tell them to have pineapple as it’s a blood thickener so you don’t really bruise. Other than that, it’s swelling that’s normal which peaks on the second day but it settles down in a maximum of 7 days.
H: Lastly, What Advise Would You Like To Give Our Readers Who Are Planning On Getting Lip Fillers?
JS: Honestly, there’s one major thing that you’d have to keep in mind which is going to a reputed clinic that has certified doctors who would be doing your filler precisely because it’s your face that you are working upon & it’s important that it’s done right, with proper hygiene measures kept in check along with expertise is essential to finally deliver the desired shape that the patient is expecting. Also, post getting the filler, you should know that smoking can reduce the lasting effect of your filler so try avoiding it as much as possible.
